Novel Summary
When 72-year-old Arthur Vance walks out of Alderwood Penitentiary after 45 years, he carries only a faded newspaper clipping about a teenage fry cook who spilled hot oil on a deputy mayor's son. As he begins peeling back the grease-stained layers of a small-town tragedy, he discovers how a manager's tiny lie to cover a health-code violation metastasized into a conspiracy of judges, police, and politicians who built their careers on his wrongful conviction. In the tradition of Loreth Anne White, this is a haunting exploration of how ordinary, frail human desires can calcify into monstrous injustice.
