Novel Summary
Eamon Voss is exonerated after thirty-seven years in Bentham Penitentiary when a federal writ of habeas corpus exposes the collusion behind his murder conviction. In the case Voss v. Halstead et al., suppressed testimony and doctored records come to light. Now a frail, elderly man, Voss is driven not by rage, but by a need to understand how his life was stolen. His search peels back decades of lies, revealing that a vast conspiracy of silence was built to hide a truth almost too banal to believe: the original sin was a junior court clerk’s tiny, pathetic desire to impress his superior.
