Novel Summary
In 1781, the Qing Dynasty reels from the Gansu fraud case, the greatest corruption scandal since the founding of the empire. In its aftermath, the state erects the "Gansu Border Wall," ostensibly to prevent unrest, but accompanied by deliberately ambiguous relief laws. Zhang Yunsheng, reborn after his entire family was executed in the purges, awakens in 1780. Separated from the Li family by this new wall, he discovers an ancient tunnel. Desperate to rewrite fate, he commits survival crimes—smuggling grain through the tunnel—only to realize that every legal loophole is a backdoor intentionally left by powerful legislators to extort and embezzle with impunity.
