Novel Summary
In the fictional European country of Varennia, a missing heiress’s fate hangs on the testimony of Adrian Hale, a blind piano tuner who heard her murder. As the civil case Rice v. Riddle drags on without a body, the accused, Julian Riddle, invades Adrian’s isolated villa to silence him. There, in absolute darkness, the two men stage a lethal duel of senses—Adrian guided only by scent and sound, Riddle by sight. The novel explores how time may bleach the bloodstains, but the aftertaste of terror never dilutes.
