Novel Summary
In the rust-belt town of Millbrook, retired judge Cornelius Hays has spent forty years building a legend of incorruptible justice. But when a drunken drifter whispers the name of a slum boy Cornelius once was—a secret buried under a river of lies—the old man discovers that honor is not a shield, but a wound that bleeds when picked. To seal every mouth that remembers his filth-stained youth, Cornelius turns into a silent reaper, killing one by one. Yet each death does not cleanse his name; it only stains the air with ashes that, when inhaled, force the whole town to ask: if justice cannot speak for the dead, does it speak at all?
