In a modern Chinese megacity, a series of bizarre deaths caused by hacked infrastructure draws a weary cybercrime detective into a chilling echo of a Qing dynasty literary inquisition. As victims are executed via rogue power grids and water systems, she discovers an online cabal replicating the Hu Zhongzao case, using anonymous masses to convict "thought criminals" and a silent hacker collective to carry out remote, untraceable killings.
