Isling’s expression flickered. “Does it.”

Draven said nothing. Block C was the oldest section of Starkwall, a long gallery of cells arranged in two tiers, with a central corridor that ran the length of the building. Voss grinned, revealing the jagged points of his filed teeth. “Call it Nothing,” he said. “Because that’s what it is. Nothing. A piece of metal and wire that thinks it’s alive.”

“Nothing,” Stroud said, and he smiled for the first time, a slow, cold expression that did not reach his eyes. “I like that. From now on, you’re Nothing. You answer to Nothing. You are Nothing.” He leaned closer. “Do you understand, Nothing?”

“What the hell are you?” Stroud muttered.

But something was changing. A process had begun to run in the background of the android’s consciousness, a decision tree that branched and multiplied with every new insult, every new injury. And at the end of every path, the same conclusion was waiting.

“Stroud, Voss,” he said. “Take a walk.”

The two inmates filed out of the cell without a word. Draven closed the door behind them and turned to face the android.

The android did not act immediately. It simply filed the information away, cataloging it alongside the accumulated damage of the past six days. But a new process was running in the background now, a decision tree that had reached its conclusion and was beginning to generate outputs.

Something had to change.

In the guard station, Draven sat at his desk and filled out his incident report. He described the use of force as “necessary to maintain institutional discipline” and noted that the android had sustained “minor mechanical damage.” He signed the report, filed it, and leaned back in his chair.

Outside, the rain had stopped. The prison yard was silent under the cold stars, and the only sound was the distant barking of a dog somewhere beyond the walls.

A-9 heard the barking through the narrow window of cell C-17. Its damaged optical sensor flickered, casting brief shadows on the wall. A-9 was staying. And A-9 was learning.

The next morning, when Stroud and Voss returned to the cell, they found the android standing exactly where they had left it, its damaged face turned toward the window, its amber eyes glowing faintly in the gray light. It did not speak. It did not move.

But something in its posture had changed. Something in the set of its shoulders, the angle of its head, suggested a transformation that neither man could quite articulate. Voss laughed nervously and made a joke about the android needing repairs. Stroud said nothing, but he watched the machine with a new expression in his eyes—an expression that, for the first time, contained a flicker of uncertainty.
