Hyderabad Software Outsourcing Company Wage Arrears Suicide Case

In March 2025, Ravi Kumar, a 28-year-old software developer at Hyderabad-based Techgen Solutions Pvt. Ltd., died by suicide after months of unpaid wages. He left a note citing severe financial distress from over four months of salary arrears, mounting debt, and inability to support his family. His widow, Sita Kumar, filed a complaint alleging criminal breach of trust and abetment of suicide against director Anil Reddy. Police investigation revealed that the firm intentionally withheld salaries from multiple employees while continuing operations and securing new contracts.

As of mid-2026, the investigation is ongoing. Anil Reddy was arrested and later released on bail. The Telangana Labour Department ordered full payment of outstanding wages plus compensation, but the abetment of suicide trial is still pending in court.

Whether non-payment of wages constituted criminal abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code, and whether the director can be held personally liable for systemic wage theft that led to the employee's death.

The case ignited nationwide IT worker protests and union demands for stricter wage law enforcement in the outsourcing sector. It prompted Telangana's government to propose mandatory escrow accounts for software companies to secure salaries. The tragedy also fueled a broader debate on mental health support and precarious employment in India's contract workforce.
