Odisha Mangrove Illegal Felling Case

In early 2025, authorities in Odisha, India, uncovered a massive illegal logging operation within the protected mangrove forests of the Bhitarkanika region. The racket, allegedly led by timber smuggler Suresh Pradhan and local contractor Bijay Kumar Sethi, involved the felling of thousands of mangrove trees, severely damaging critical coastal ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Investigations revealed collusion with corrupt forest officials who facilitated the smuggling in exchange for bribes. The Odisha Forest Department filed a complaint, leading to arrests and seizure of timber worth millions. The case highlighted severe lapses in enforcement of the Forest Conservation Act and the Environment Protection Act.

The Orissa High Court convicted Suresh Pradhan and Bijay Kumar Sethi under the Wildlife Protection Act and Forest Act, sentencing them to seven years imprisonment and heavy fines. Two forest officers were dismissed and await trial. The court ordered seized funds to be used for mangrove restoration.

Whether the defendants can be convicted solely on circumstantial evidence of timber smuggling; the extent of corrupt official involvement and their liability; and whether compensation claims adequately reflect long-term ecological damage.
