Tamil Nadu E-Waste Dumping Case

In April 2025, authorities in Tamil Nadu, India, uncovered a massive illegal e-waste dumping operation in the Tirunelveli district. The multinational corporation Global Waste Solutions Ltd. was found to have shipped over 5,000 metric tons of hazardous electronic waste, falsely labeled as recyclable metal scrap, from developed nations. The waste was buried in abandoned agricultural land, leading to severe soil and groundwater contamination with lead, mercury, and cadmium. Local residents reported a spike in respiratory illnesses and birth defects. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board filed a criminal complaint, and the Madras High Court took suo motu cognizance after a public interest litigation was filed by affected villagers.

The Madras High Court ruled in late 2025 that Global Waste Solutions Ltd. was guilty of violating the Environment Protection Act and the Hazardous Waste Management Rules. The court imposed a fine of ₹500 crore, ordered full remediation of the contaminated site at the company's expense, and issued arrest warrants for three senior executives. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction on appeal in early 2026.
